On a ship, a lifeboat is just as important as a life raft, a lifeboat is like a small boat that is kept on board to carry out emergency relocation, to prevent risks such as capsizing, ship accidents, etc…

There must be a mandatory number of lifeboats on board (as defined by SOLAS based on the size and mass of the ship) so that they can be easily accessed and used in an emergency.

There are 3 types of lifeboats:

Open lifeboat
Enclosed lifeboat
Free-fall lifeboat

IMPORTANCE OF LIFEBOAT MAINTENANCE

Like liferafts, lifeboats require timely maintenance to be ready for use in top condition. Although it is not desirable to use it, a lifeboat will help minimize damage and protect the life of the crew in an emergency at sea. A maintenance certificate issued by authorized maintenance from the maker will be a valid document that helps the ship to be operated continuously without interruption in time.

LIFEBOAT MAINTENANCE ITEMS

According to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974 and the latest regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as well as recommendations from manufacturers, periodic inspection & maintenance of lifeboats required on marine works must be properly recognized and strictly followed the right process. Annual general inspection, maintenance, and test operation

Check the operation of the release mechanism of the lifeboat
Test operation of the loaded release function of lifeboats and crane-launched rescue boats

Five-year total inspection, disassem,bly and overload operation test

The 5-year operational test of the launching appliance winch shall be carried out with a test load equal to 1.1 times the mass of the lifeboat or lifeboat with full personnel and equipment.
Test operation and dismantling for years of lifeboat release devices (including free-fall lifeboats), rescue boats, and fast rescue boats including:

+ Remove the hook release blocks;

+ Checks related to tolerances and design requirements;

+ Adjust the release mechanism system after assembly;

+ Inspect critical parts for defects and cracks.
